The 1999 Seoul International Conference of NGOs
Seoul, Korea October 10 - 16, 1999



Clarissa Starey, PPSEAWA's representative to the United Nations in Geneva and Shirley Munyan, PPSEAWA's representative to UNESCO in Paris attended this meeting.

There were 6700 NGOs registered from everywhere in the world. His Excellency, Dae Jung Kim, President of Korea, opened the Conference. He said, "The 21st Century will belong to the democratic societies, the civil societies and the NGOs". His wife, Her Excellency Lee Hee-ho, the niece of Mary Lee, a former president of PPSEAWA, offered the congratulatory address at the Closing Ceremony. During the week, there were many workshops on every conceivable subject that would be of interest to NGOs. One thousand organizations were represented at this meeting. The work of the conference was organized into ten plenary sessions and 180 workshops.

PPSEAWA's participation too the form of:

  1. A special poster for this conference. One thousand copies were made available to participants.
  2. PPSEAWA Korea did a workshop "What it Takes to Give Children Long Life".
  3. The All India Women's Conference (PPSEAWA-India) did a workshop "Education for All". Included in this workshop was a recap and history of the many workshops sponsored by PPSEAWA since 1992, covering subjects on Women and... .the environment, family health, teen health, and children's health. All of PPSEAWA has sponsored one-day meetings on these issues critical to the welfare of the family.

At the conclusion of the conference, a declaration was issued which will be consolidated for consideration at the Millennium Forum in New York, May 22 - 26, 2000.

The declaration, "Achieving Our Vision for the 21st Century" covers:

  4. Social And Economic Development
  5. Youth and Children
  6. Public, Reproductive and mental Health
  7. Education for All
  8. Productive Aging
  9. Environment and Human Settlement
