Fourth International Conference On Health Promotion
The 4th International Conference on Health Promotion will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia from 21-25 July 1997.The conference is being organized by the World Health Organization in cooperation with the Government of Indonesia and co-sponsored/financially supported by WHO Member States, United Nations agencies, NGO organizations and the private sector.
TheJakarta conference will be the fourth in a series of international conferences that have motivated many governments to develop an approach to health promotion and public health embracing all sectors of society and the environment. The first took place in Ottawa, Canada, in 1986, followed by the second in Adelaide, Australia, in 1989, and the third, in Sundsvall, Sweden, in 1991.
The Ottawa Charter has spawned many examples of successful cooperation between public and private sectors, governments and NGOs, lay people and professionals. It has also inspired a number of successful WHO projects, including Healthy Cities, Villages, Municipalities, Health Promoting Schools, and Healthy Islands.
The Jakarta conference will draw and build on these experiences as an integral part of a dynamic five-year WHO action plan to build capacity for health promotion and public health promotion at local, natonal; and intemational levels.
Concrete follow-up action is vital. To ensure the Jakarta Declaration becomes a launchpad for positive action on a global scale, WHO links and develops initiatives such as regional health promoting school networks, worldwide Internet services, etc. The conference outcomes will be submitted to international conferences and summits later in 1997 and in 1998, to under-line that health becomes everybody's business.
