Thailand Reportby Khunying Sumanee Sophonpanich Rural Development Project: PPSEAWA Thailand members and a few other women's associations members went to visit the Thailand - Kampuchea border's three day care centers under PPSEAWA Thailand's sponsorship and donated clothing, school and sports equipment, blankets, towels, milk, as well as cash for food supply to the 120 needy young children. Child and Family Project: PPSEAWA Thailand together with the National Council of Women, organized a seminar on the topic "Father - an Essential Component of the Family" with leading guest speakers from Mahidol University. On 20 September 1996 National Youth Day, 150 youth from various high schools participated in a Seminar "Youth Activities Contribute to Societal Development" jointly organized by PPSEAWA Thailand and the Psychiatric Nurse and Mental Association of Thailand. Literacy Project: In 1992, the Train Library was set up at the K.M. 11 Railway Community by PPSEAWA Thailand to facilitate access to books for the Community's youth and general population. This project was made possible with the co-operation of the Non-Formal Education, Ministry of Education. The Train Library became a center for learning for those who have not received a formal high school education. The project became a success and PPSEAWA Thailand has just contributed to another project called "THAI-COMM Long Distance Education Center" through a satellite dish and television screen which were set up by the Non-Formal Education, Ministry of Education, at the Train Library. This project not only aims at those who live far away, but also those who live in the vicinity of the K.M. 11 Railway Community who can learn from this novel teaching method. Asia Pacific Project: PPSEAWA Thailand, in co-operation with the International Relations Division and Communication Arts Faculty of Sripatum University, organized a conference on "Women and Journalism." There were 400 participants who took part. Thanpuying Sumalee Chartikavanich was invited as special guest speaker on "Women's Role in Globalization Era." Fund-Raising Project: Fund-Raising Committee organized "PPSEAWA Gala Night" at the Dusit Thani Hotel in order to raise funds on the occasion of His Majesty the King's Golden Jubilee. The amateur singers and models who made the evening possible were PPSEAWA Thailand's family members. Activities: An upcoming activity is one day trip to a Rose Garden at Nakorn Ratchasima's Parkchong District in mid-March 1997. Environmental Project: Mrs. Jirathun reports that the environment program has been active in promoting environmental awareness among the membership. To teach more about how to do environmental impact assessment handbooks have been published on the subject. There has also been reading of poems in the Thai language in local schools to educate the children about the environment. This is an ongoing program.
