Jakarta, Indonesia - Solar Energy
The UNESCO Office in Jakarta is working with the Indonesian Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology to produce a video package and CD-ROM on the Sukatani Solar Village. Sukatani was the first village in Indonesia to be powered by solar photovoltaic electricity. Sukatani Solar Village is a pilot project by which the 50mW of Photovoltaic Rural Electrification programme aims to install Solar Home Systems in one million rural homes. The video and CD-ROM will promote information sharing to facilitate technology transfer between developing countries as well as South-South cooperation. The video package, consisting of 30 and 10 minute video presentations, will illustrate Sukatani Solar Village from both the technical and social perspectives. The CD-ROM will include video material, graphics and information about solar energy and the Village. Both the video and the CD-ROM will be produced in English and Bahasa Indonesian.
Bangkok, Thailand - Upgrading Literacy Programmes
From 28 November to 6 December 1996, UNESCO's, Bangkok Office and the Division of Basic Education at Headquarters jointly organized a regional training workshop on improving the information base for literacy programmes evaluation. Participating countries were: Bangladesh, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Fiji, Western Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan and the Philippines. This activity falls under UNESCO's Regular Programme for 'Improving the information base for literacy programmes in Member States.' The main objective is to upgrade and consolidate national capacity in data collection and analysis so that literacy programmes may be monitored and evaluated. To do this, a set of indicators is applied to measure the internal efficiency of the literacy programmes. The workshop used a basic training manual on data collection and analysis which was developed in previous workshops and which will continue to be revised to meet the needs of the Member States in Asia and the Pacific where it is widely distributed.
Apia, Western Samoa - Education on the Airwaves
Learning without Frontiers is making use of the radio. Contracts have been signed by the Cook Islands, Solomon Islands and Marshall Islands for an exciting series of radio programmes in each country. Target groups are girls and women, youth not in formal education and learners of all ages in remote rural areas. The ten half-hour broadcasts will be produced with representatives of the target groups and will provide practical educational information which corresponds to their needs. The challenge accepted by the producers is to be innovative in both approach and content.
