PPSEAWA USA has seven local chapters scattered throughout the country stretching from the Atlantic to Pacific, presenting a challenge for the national president to keep in touch. Thanks to modern technology, fax and e-mail have made this easier but does not replace personal contact. Our annual meeting in May in New York enables those who attend the opportunity to visit the United Nations and renew our bonds while taking care of PPSEAWA business. In addition to the annual meeting, each autumn the National Board meets on a rotational basis in the home-town of the individual chapters.
In November 1999, Toledo, Ohio hosted the national Board meeting and organized a one-day workshop that was jointly sponsored by UNESCO, WHO, and the Nestle Company, under the title: "Children: Our Window to the 21st Century". The workshop was a great success and involved not only PPSEAWA members who came from all other chapters, but local nurses, social workers and other involved parents. More than 80 people attended.
PPSEAWA USA was also represented at a conference titled "Women 2000: Beijing Plus Five". Akari Yamada wrote a comprehensive article which is printed in this issue of the Bulletin.
On May 19, 2000 we are going to hold our annual meeting in New York, which will precede the Millennium Forum held at the United Nations in order to afford members a chance to attend both events.
We are concentrating on plans for the conference in the Cook Islands in November. As of this writing we have 23 members committed to attending the conference.
Around the USA:
The Chicago chapter hosted Pam Logan, author of the book "Among Warriors". She gave a lecture and slide presentation on women in Tibet. Pam is a member of PPSEAWA-Los Angeles and heads up a group dedicated to restoring frescoes in one of the temples in Tibet. She addressed a joint meeting of the International Women's Association of Chicago and the PPSEAWA-Chicago chapter.
Royal Buscombe, Chicago chapter president, had an extended visit from her daughter Eve, a member of PPSEAWA-Australia. While in Chicago Eve attended a local meeting.
Northern California (formerly Stockton chapter) sent us the sad news that one of PPSEAWA's long-time members, Cisco Kihara, passed away in June of 1999.
From New York, we received another sad note, Fran Todd, president of New York lost her mother and best friend in late December, 1999.
