International Bulletin - December 2001
President's Message
Dear PPSEAWA Sisters,
The world is a different place since September 11, 2001. Many of us had no idea before what horror the word "terrorism" included. Terrorism's purpose is to control people, societies and possibly even the world through fear. Since that tragic day in September, people have cancelled flights and meetings, have changed their investments and spending habits, have sent their employed staff home, and have even thought twice about touching a newspaper or opening their mailbox because of fear.
How does all this affect PPSEAWA? Our goals of peace and development through cultural understanding must not be shaken. They must instead become stronger than ever before. We have already laid the foundation of women of different races and religions, and cultures working together in respect for one another toward a common goal. Now we must continue building together, hand in hand.
I realise some of our PPSEAWA sisters, especially those living in New York City, have suffered personally from the tragedy and are continuing to suffer from the effects. I also realise it is an ongoing tragedy which will affect many more of us in different ways in the future. Yet we cannot let terrorism win.
If we live each day with fear dictating our decisions, terrorism is winning. If we are afraid of our neighbour who once was our friend, terrorism is winning. If we fail to teach our children to love others as they love themselves, terrorism is winning. If we forget how to be joyful in the simple blessings of life, terrorism is winning.
PPSEAWA's meetings and projects must go on. Our workshops must not be cancelled. Our peace projects must happen. Our conference in Singapore is planned appropriately in a country that reaches with respect to the east and to the west, to the north and to the south. Everyone will be heartily welcomed.
We cannot let fear dictate our future. With courage in our future and peace in our hearts, we will win.
With love (`Ofa atu),
HRH Princess Nanasipau`u Tuku`aho
