Promoting Peace in Tonga

Kalo Fohe

During the last decade the Kingdom of Tonga has attracted immigrants from around the world. Its non-Tongan population has grown from about 2% to perhaps 5%. PPSEAWA Tonga decided that promoting peace through cultural understanding shouldn't wait until the next International Conference.

With the assistance of PPSEAWA International President, HRH Princess Nanasipau`u Tuku`aho, the members of PPSEAWA Tonga prepared a traditional costume show and afternoon tea for four hundred guests. It was held on at 2:30 pm on Saturday, November 17th at the Queen Salote College Hall.

The first of the more than fifty young women and men modelled ancient costumes made from leaves. Then a variety of beautifully crafted traditional costumes made of leaves, bark, shells, seeds, mats and tapa were modelled. The final couples wore finely woven chiefly wedding costumes.

The show concluded with a fashion parade and Tongan dance participated in by all of the models. During the dance guests came forward with their donations for the Vaiola Hospital.

The members of PPSEAWA Tonga felt that the twofold purpose of the event - to promote peace through cultural understanding and to raise funds for the continuation of their environmental project - was achieved.
