President's Message

HRH Princess Nanasipau'u Tuku'aho of the Kingdom of Tonga was elected International President at the 21st Conference of PPSEAWA in the Cook Islands

Dear PPSEAWA sisters,

Warmest greetings from the Tongan Islands!

Thank you for your vote of confidence during PPSEAWA's 21st International Conference in the Cook Islands. I will try to do my best to lead PPSEAWA during the next three years in a path of peace and development.

I wish to thank everyone who was somehow involved in organising the conference. It was a great time of meeting old friends and making new ones. It helped us all to refocus on the issues before us with renewed encouragement and vigour. We returned to our own countries with the inspiration needed to continue working for peace. During our first council meeting Paddy Walker was appointed the Ambassador of Peace. It is our intention that she will continue working for peace in the Cook Islands and within PPSEAWA.

As a volunteer organisation, it is appropriate for PPSEAWA to aim at growing in our strategic use of volunteer contributions during this International Year of Volunteers (IYV). The UN has identified the following objectives for the IYV 2001: 1) Increased recognition of volunteers, 2) Facilitation of volunteer work, 3) Enhanced networking and 4) Promotion of volunteering.

During the conference I recognized the importance of communication in empowering PPSEAWA. One of my original aims for these three years was to strengthen our communication links between council members and national associations and between chapters in countries. Arriving home to a complete breakdown in communication, I realized that improved communication had to begin at the top. Faxes and e-mails were being delivered to me late and mail was not coming through at all. It has taken me time to work out all the difficulties. I apologize for the inconveniences this has caused many of you. I can now be contacted directly at:

I would appreciate receiving the address of your national and local office bearers and any other information you feel can strengthen our communication links.

Thank you for the condolences I received after the death of my father's oldest sister, Baroness Fatafehi Tuita. I appreciated your thoughts and prayers for me and my family during our time of sorrow.

'Ofa atu,
Princess Nanasipau'u Tuku'aho
President, PPSEAWA International
