News from PPSEAWA Japan

By Yukiko Backes

On January 21st, 40 members of PPSEAWA Japan got together for the first meeting of the year 201. President, Yukiko Backes spoke of the new prospect of our activities by quoting Jane Addams, "The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain... until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life."

Listening to the delegates' reports of the Cook Islands Conference, members enjoyed the mainstream of the Conference and shared the highlights by slides and video. Our delegation was made up of 34 members from Tokyo, 5 from Aichi, and 1 from Kyoto. We arrived in the Cooks despite a heavy snow the previous day before departure.

PPSEAWA Japan is made up of five working committees, each has a report:

NGO Committee: This committee is active with 48 other Japanese Women's NGOs. They had an All-Japan NGO Women's conference in Tokyo on November 18th, 2000. Members who did not attend the conference in the Cooks participated in this gathering.

International Exchange Committee: is supporting foreign students from the PPSEAWA area. Two students from Korea, one from Australia and one from Malaysia are receiving our scholarship now. They also have a chance to learn Japanese culture and customs through home visit programs. Another project is a Foster Plan and we are supporting 2 children from Bangladesh, 1 child in India and 1 child in the Philippines now. We are glad to know those children are growing soundly.

Area Study Committee: This committee is focused on studying the PPSEAWA area and the subjects raised by the conference. Four times a year the members study themes based on the conference. February 9th, we met to discuss today's problems of child education in Japan.

Ways and Means Committee: This committee holds bazaars twice a year, in March and September to raise funds for service projects. The Committee arranges tickets for recommendable movies and cooperates promoting dairy products with other organizations.

Public Relations Committee: edits the PPSEAWA Japan publication twice a year in January and July. The committee members take pictures whenever there are meetings and Programs. PPSEAWA Japan is written in Japanese. Anyone interested in reading the publication is welcome to subscribe.
