Main Theme Of The Conference - "Sharing a Culture of Peace"
In a season of global unrest on many fronts, the message of peace is especially poignant. Never in the history of humankind has there been a greater need for mutual co-operation and understanding.
The theme "Developing a Culture of Peace" for this 22nd International Conference builds on the theme of our 21st conference at the Cook Islands during our hearts have been warmed by the theme "Igniting the Power of Peace".
Our call in the year 2003 is to look at concrete plans and approaches that will strengthen the culture of peace established in many communities and to share insights and paradigms that promote peace.
We look forward to taking up the challenge of building structures that will support sustainable peace and sustaining synergy.
Some of the questions to be addressed include:
- How can we develop a culture of peace?
- What are the educational, economic, social, cultural and governance structures that must be in place?
- Is there a need for a new paradigm, mindset or orientation?
- What are our hopes and dreams for a world of peace? How can they be achieved?
We believe it is timely for us to focus on this theme and play our part in the peace efforts worldwide. We believe the conference will mark a momentous turnaround for many in our global community as we share best practices and experiences to inspire the world toward a PEACE that will last.
Sub-themes
Sub-themes are represented in the acronym PEACE as follows :
People Power
People Power reminds us that our greatest resource is people. Technological, educational and economic advancement is possible because of the people who drive and sustain it. People, including women, must therefore be motivated and empowered to participate at all levels of a community. If the people lead, the leaders follow.
Enhancing Education
Enhancing Education reminds us of the need to look into the restructuring of educational environments, be they formal or informal, conducive to the development of a culture of peace.
Affirmative Action
Affirmative Action focuses on the needs of the minority and the marginalised. The sharing of good practice and effective outcomes will optimise resources and enhance commitment.
Compassionate Connection
Compassionate Connection revisits the realities of inter-connectedness and interdependence in our human relationships. It is essential to build communicative platforms to support a quantum leap into borderless communication based on respect and love.
Economic Empowerment
Economic Enhancement is a concrete expression of a quest for peace. For sustainable development in peace efforts, economic well-being for all is imperative. Sharing of success stories as well as potential pitfalls will grow wisdom in developing a culture of peace.
