Report from PPSEAWA Japan

Yukiko I. Backes, President

Our committee received the Peace Week message and began planning just before September 11th. It was a horrible disaster what we saw on TV news on the very first day of our Peace Week. We felt as if God had wanted to tell us the urgent necessity of peace.

Peace is not something we make in a loud voice to everyone but the way of our lives. Let our lives speak peace. PPSEAWA members feel every minute is important to be aware of peace. We pray what is going on in the world now and the cycle of violence should be stopped immediately.

Peace Week Activities in Japan:

1. We made pictorial posters for PEACE WEEK and made plans for our activities.

2. We took a photo of the statue "Peace for the Children of the World." The statue was established by a group of high school students who eagerly wished for the World Peace at Koto Ward, downtown Tokyo on May 5, 2001 when we celebrated the first Children's Day in the 21st century. The designer of the statue was a Japanese Junior High School girl. You can see a huge cracked. It symbolizes an image of uncertain peace. Out of that egg may come real peace some day. The girl watering the flower symbolizes the human being, who nurtures a sunny and strong sunflower, wishing for a bright future.

3. We visited FUTUREKIDS, a computer school for children, newly opened in one of the busiest sections of Tokyo. Children are taught to be able to communicate with people all over the world by the technology of computers, so that they can exchange their cultures and understand one another better. They also try to build a network with all the children who study at their branch schools in 73 countries around the world. In Japan, children at elementary schools are learning English as well as a computer skill. At present there are not enough teachers who can teach children computer skills.

4. We have made more than 1,000 folded paper cranes. PPSEAWA members and their friends have made these cranes, which are supposed to bring happiness, well-being and peace to everyone. We wished Peace for children and all in the world during Peace Week.

May Peace Prevail on Earth.
