Challenges for Women in the Next Millennium

"Challenges for Women in theNext Millennium" was the theme of the Asia Pacific Watch meeting in Chandigarh, India in January 1998. PPSEAWA Honorary President Thanpuying Sumalee Cahrtikavanij attended the meeting as homnorary Chairperson. Countries represented included Bangladesh, China, India, Japan, Nepal, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Tahiland. Dr. Mohini Giri, Chairperson for the Indian National Commission and Dr. Noleen Heyzer, UNIFEM Executive Director opened the conference. Thanpuying Sumalee gave an indtrouction to Asia Pacific Watch and Dr. Pam Rajput, Chair and Convenor of the meeting gave the welcome address.

Violence Against Women, Human Rights of Women and the Girl Child were the themes for discussion for the next two days. Country reports on the themes were presented by the participants. Michiko Nakamura led a group from Japan and Dr. Manorama Bawa of the All India Women's Conference also came. The presence of PPSEAWA members at this regional meeting confirmed PPSEAWA's strong commitment for the work on the davancement of women in the Asia Pacific region. APW concluded with a mission statement which was presented at the 42nd session of the UN Commission on the status in New York in March 1998.
