Ten Flashpoints in East Asia

  1. Kurile Islands - occupied by Russia, claimed by Japan
  2. North Korea - isolated, hungry and still technically at war with South Korea
  3. Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands - rival claims by China, Taiwan and Japan
  4. Taiwan - considered a rival provence by China since 1949, China does not recognize independent status.
  5. Myanmar - ruled by military junta which does not recognize 1990 election results
  6. Cambodia - political unrest and coups have left an unstable government
  7. Spratly Islands - variously claimed by China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.
  8. Mindanao - in spite of a treaty, Muslim rebels are still fighting for independence from the Philippines.
  9. East Timor - former Portuguese colony annexed by Indonesia in 1975.
  10. Bougainville - seeking Independence from Papua-New Guinea.
