Children, The Family and Health: What it Takes to Give Children Long Life
The Singapore Workshop: Comments from the floor following presentations of the group discussion reports
Thailand
Life long support of mothers needed to support their children through education.
Singapore
Query regarding whether child abuse was addressed in the community worker and teacher groups. Also what was the difference between discipline and child abuse as Singapore was addressing this issue through legislation currently.
India reported that we discussed this as a priority issue in the group.
Comment by Ann Aurelius
She reviewed her responsibility as a teacher in the USA for mandatory reportings, felt that many parents were learning about the difference between child abuse and discipline and that her description was that extremely harsh punishment was viewed as child abuse.
Indonesia
Work with disabled children and that often, these issues of child abuse needed to be addressed through legislation.
Malaysia
There has been an increase of reports of child abuse in Malaysia. It generally has been from children of families living in poverty such as families where there were unemployed parents. Feels there have been no measures taken by the Ministry to address this through legislation. High proportion of immigrants and there are links with this group.
New Zealand
There is an incidence of child abuse and there is mandatory reporting for child abuse. Government agencies have been reviewing this legislation. Generally reported when there is abuse in lower socio economic groups, however the participant feels that there is a lot of hidden abuse in the higher income families.
Singapore
Education regarding the equality of men and women. Feels that this is generally not discussed openly although it has been referred to when we discuss health education. Tendency for women to hold most of the responsibility for the upbringing of women. That fathers feel excluded from this except to bring in the money to the family. Children could be taught in schools regarding equality issues between girls and boys. In many countries the parents cannot educate all the children. If there needs to be a choice the girl child is not chosen. Girls should be trained to be good parents. A holistic education. Fathers and mothers should know that they play complementary roles. Sons and daughters should be treated equally.
India
Referred to a publication called “Hand in hand with equality”. She referred to the girl children being put to death. Complicated issues associated with inequality between girls and boys. But this issue is being addressed in the country.
Philippines
Discussed issues regarding child abuse as being an imperative issue.
Australia
Believe that equality between men and women is a vital issue. However it will only happen if we focus on the education of girls and young women and they will learn to demand equality.
Query from Shirley Munyan
Regarding teenage pregnancies and strategies to assist with this.
Cook Islands
Being addressed through minority of education through sex education. Discussed in the teachers group. Changing roles of girls and boys - believes there needs to be a planned approach that involves the boys and girls. Believes that just telling them will not be enough and that more well planned strategies should be developed. Call for teachers to develop these strategies to address changing roles of girls and boys. Feels that focus should not just be parents that should focus on children to help them develop life skills, to help them to make decisions. Highlight developing boys to be independent individuals as well as competent parents.
Comment from chair - Ann Aurelius
Importance of PPSEWA conferences for making links between members. So exchange ideas either by giving business cards or once receive the notes from the conference then make contact with other members. Highlight boys and that often the competitive system of learning favoured men and that the cooperative mode of learning suits all children.
Cook Islands
In families in the Cook Islands the boy who is involved in pregnancy is not apprehended in the legal system because the family covers up the issue of a pregnant teenager. If we can sort out the adults’ problems then the children would be fine. Generally the problems in the legal system have been with the parents and then this affects the children. Wants to emphasise the importance of the networking system eg between the groups that are doing the same thing such as youth groups, church groups, . Who are we working with and then contact them to enable smooth working together.
Chairman from Thailand
Congratulated us on the work of the group. Following discussion with Ann, she felt that selection of delegates was appropriate as the groups worked well together.
Ann feels that she would like to submit the reports from each of the groups. Gained consensus from the group we would include the issues associated regarding equality between men and women.
Thanks from Paddy to the conference for participants in the work that we have done and that we should take the spirit of ourselves and “run with it” to assist our own countries.
Singapore
Requested that the role of the media be included in future PPSEAWA conferences.
Malaysia
Thankyou to SWOC, Shirley Munyan and Nestle for support.
