A Life Worth Living: Teenagers, The Family, and Health

The Pan Pacific and Southeast Asia Women's Association, Philippine Chapter, in its desire to provide more activities to the youth participants held a two-day youth meeting instead of the original schedule for one day.
The objectives of the youth meeting centered on the following:
- To give a chance to youth groups especially those coming from far places the opportunity to experience attendance to youth conferences.
- To provide activities that would draw out the talents, initiatives and value systems of the target clientele.
- To provide opportunities for the youth from the different tribes in the Mountain Province to work together in planning programs and projects for the development of their respective areas.
The youth meeting was held in the town of Sabangan, Mt. Province, a municipality which is situated 18 kilometers from Bontoc, the capital town of the Mt. Province. The youth delegates were billeted in the dormitory of the San Alfonso High School and the group and plenary sessions were held in the conference hall of the above mentioned school. There were three hundred delegates that came from the different municipalities. The delegates represented different youth groups which included the Girl Scouts of the Philippines, Boy Scouts of the Philippines, out-of-school youth and other volunteer groups.
Speakers and other resource persons were invited to share their expertise in topics which included the following: Basic Health Care and Hygiene, Proper Food and Nutrition, Healthy Family Relationship, Teenage Sex Relationship, Early Marriage and its Consequences, Drugs and Social Diseases, Preparation for Global Competitiveness / Moral Recovery and Coping with Problems.
Implementing various activities during the conference, the participants had the opportunity to react to the various topics discussed during their group sessions. Selected teachers and school nurses acted as facilitators during the conference. Evening socials was conducted to provide more opportunities for group interaction.
During the closing ceremonies, the participants gave their impressions. Excerpts of their impressions included the following:
a) It was our first time to attend such wholesome event - putting lessons, responsibilities and fun together.
b) The topics were timely, interesting and the speakers were very good communicators.
c) We thank very much PPSEAWA and Nestle for a very good learning experience for us.
d) We hope to be given more opportunities to attend this kind of conference.
Certificates of Participation were awarded to the participants during the closing program together with their transportation expenses. Guest speakers and facilitators were also given certificates of appreciation.
Much still has to be done to harness the talents and enthusiasm of the youth in this part of the country. This recently concluded activity gave a fresh start to continue undertaking programs and projects for the development of the youth for national progress.
