Basic Coping Skills for Youth
Purpose of Training:
For young people participating to use the information and skills presented as a framework to assess the impact of social issues on themselves and assist them to make informed choices. By learning coping skills, youth would be better able to identify and participate in resolving problems within their own families and communities. In doing so, they would be helping themselves and their families towards more healthy balanced lifestyles.
Statement of Objectives:
After completing this workshop, participants will:
- be able to identify their personal values
- understand themselves better
- understand how to communicate effectively
- understand how a group function. and makes decisions
- gain skills to make informed decisions
- resolve problems
- understand the causes of stress and how to manage it
- be able to maintain balanced lifestyles
Self evaluation; Understanding yourself; Personal values; Roles and function; Behaviour and image
i) Participants identified their personal values.
ii) Participants defined who they are, their role in the family and in the community, at work and at school.
iii) Participants identified and discussed how their personal values and role in the family and community affect the way they behave and are perceived by others
Effective communications; Understanding others; Communication Process; Barriers to communication; Verbal/Non-verbal communication
i) Participants understood the communication process and how it applies to themselves and their families
ii) Participants understood the barriers to effective communication and identified some which are relevant in their families and communities .
iii) Participants understood the difference between verbal and non-verbal communication and its significance in trying to understand other people.
Problem-solving and decision making skills; Conflict; Problem solving process; Decision-making process
i) Participants began to understand conflict and how to identity it and the problem-solving process and how to use it to resolve conflict.
ii) Participants understood the basic steps in the decision making process.
Group development and leadership skill building; Functions of groups; Group process; Leadership
i) Participants began to understand the different functions of groups; how to develop and to understand group process and to identify how it applies in their families.
ii) Participants :learned how to lead a group and the factors which make an effective leader.
Stress management for young people; Causes of stress; Working through the "stressors"; How to manage it
i) Participants learned of the causes of their stress and how to deal with stress and strategies to manage it.
