Questions & Answers, April 7, afternoon:
Member of the Audience, Question: How is it best to communicate warnings about infectious diseases?
Answer: Dr. Prado: This is a consumer problem. In each country things are handled differently. Usually it is handled in the region where the outbreak occurred. In some cases partial information is communicated through the media.
Answer: Dr. Michanie: A proactive communication was made last year at holiday time in Buenos Aires for the first time by publishing the “golden rules” from WHO for food safety. The public was made more aware of food bacteria issues.
Participant from El Salvador: Question: Why is Chicken Pox not part of a required immunization program?
Answer: Dr Prada: Now there is a newer Chicken Pox vaccine which is more effective. The reality in Public Health is that there is low mortality with Chicken Pox. Manditory immunizations cover diseases with higher priority to save lives.
