Dr. Rosalinda Rubenstein

Coffee break between sessions - Dr. Rosalinda Rubenstein, left and Dr. Sylvia Michanie, right visit with Cristina de la Vega of the Organizing Committee.

My topic is Allergies and Respiratory diseases.

Asthma is not just an emotional problem; the condition can be improved medically.

Atopic Asthma is found in 10% of the population. A protein in blood causes it. Gamma Globulin I produces histamines, which over time build up into asthma.

Lungs have elastic fibers that contract. If they get broken, they are replaced by inflexible connective tissue, hindering breathing. Fifteen percent of the budget of a hospital emergency room goes for asthma.

Dust at home is the biggest contributor to Asthma. The dust mite is an inhabitant of mattresses and pillows which are made of rubber. Cotton is preferred to keep from growing these mites. If a home has over 50% humidity, these mites increase greatly. Use plastic to cover pillows and mattresses to minimize this problem.

Light and ventilation is necessary to improve health. These are the types of house needs to be considered in controlling asthma. If there is dampness in the basement, it will be necessary to kill the fungi which grow there.

Light, avoidance of humidity, eradication of molds, mildews and fungi help to provide a healthier environment. Another prevention measure is cleaning the air. The cessation of smoking is helpful. Reduction of air pollution is also important.

Blood tests can tell which persons are prone to asthma attacks.
