President's MessageThe 20th PPSEAWA International Conference in Kuala Lumpur came to its successful conclusion on September 2nd and nearly 400 participants dispersed to their homes, taking with them warm feelings of old friendships renewed as well as new ones made. Even the high level of smog that enveloped KL did not dim the camaraderie of the meeting. The conference included delegates from all 19 member countries of PPSEAWA as well as observers from the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Vladivostok, Russia. Air fares for the three observers from the Solomons and PNG were paid by PPSEAWA USA. Malaysian hospitality was lavish and continuous; we were entertained and feasted throughout the duration of the Conference. The Conference opened with speeches from three distinguished women; Her Majesty the Raja Permasuri Agong, Her Majesty Queen Halaevalu Mata'aho of Tonga, and Dr. Siti Hasmah, wife of the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Dr. Siti Hasmah continued to attend various functions throughout the conference, including a most impressive tree planting ceremony at which 400 PPSEAWA delegates each planted a tree in Kuala Lumpur Park. The US delegation also had a members' meeting in KL, at which the members officially welcomed the New Jersey chapter as the newest chapter of PPSEAWA USA. In addition, two very significant recommendations were proposed by Royal Buscombe: 1. Support the ratification and implementation of the Convention of the Rights of the Child; 2. Support UNIFEM. During the conference the USA delegation had a dinner at which we recognized our long time members: Royal Buscombe, Betty Landauer, Marjorie Wilson, Adeline Talip, Bernice Husted, Grace Ijima and Shirley Munyan, for their loyal service and dedication to PPSEAWA. Finally, I congratulate Betty Lou Girardi on her re-election as PPSEAWA International Council President.
