Solomon Islands Merit Scholarship for Women (SIMSW)

In May of 1997, the New York Chapter approved a donation of $3000 to the Solomon Islands. When approached about how Solomon Islands would use the money, Ambassador Rex Horoi who is the Permanent Representative of the Solomon Islands Mission to the United Nations, suggested setting up a Scholarship Fund for girls at SICHE. It was an exciting idea and readily accepted. Ambassador Horoi got the project underway immediately. The next couple of months he was in touch with the Director of SICHE working out the details on how the Fund would be set up and administered. Finally, in August, PPSEAWA/NY received the news that everything has been finalized. A draft of the procedures for administrating the Fund and descriptions of eligibility, conditions, etc for applicants for the scholarship were included.

The Mission in New York will act as coordinator between SICHE, PPSEAWA, and Donors. The Fund will be promoted through a brochure which will be distributed to interested parties, groups, and potential donors.

PPSEAWA/New York feels this is an excellent project. It looks forward to cooperation from other PPSEAWA chapters in building up the Fund.

A footnote to our interest in the Solomon Islands:

PPSEAWA/New York donated $2000 toward the fares of two women from the Solomon Islands and one woman from Papua New Guinea to attend PPSEAWA 20th International Conference.
