Chicago Chapter Report

In 1996-97 PPSEAWA Chicago had 39 members. The Chapter supported two philanthropic projects. The first was the partial tuition of a nursing student at Ogalala Lakota College in South Dakota. Past recipients are now working in the Indian Health Service.

The second philanthropy is the Jyoti School for Hearing Impaired Children in Kanpur, India.

The 20th International Conference of PPSEAWA takes place this year, and our program chairman Ruth Zuckerman took advantage of this to bring us two programs about our host country, Malaysia. The speaker at the first program was the Director of the Malaysian Tourist Association of Chicago. He spoke of the geography, ethnicity, education and recent history of his country. The chef for the Malaysian dinner described the ethnic influences on the cuisine.

In October Akari Yamada shared her knowledge of the Arts of Japan: Buddhist sculpture, painting, lacquer work and NOH theater masks. All of the examples she showed were from the home of her parents, Anita and Ishi Yamada.

At another meeting member Masako van Leijenhorst demonstrated the art of Japanese calligraphy with members' participation.

At other meetings Julia Brown Wolf, teacher, storyteller and lecturer spoke of the history and spiritual culture of the Lakota people. The opera "Turandot" was brought to life for the members by the program chairman, Ruth Zuckerman.

The annual Christmas Tea was held at the lovely Victorian home of Royal Buscombe with members of Northwestern University International-American Women's Association attending.

The annual meeting and election of officers will be held in June and hosted by Betty Lou Girardi, who will speak on the "Structure and Administration of PPSEAWA."
