L.A. Chapter Reportby Marilyn Garcia In January of this year, we formed the Los Angeles Chapter of PPSEAWA. The new PPSEAWA members were given welcoming gifts - courtesy of the national PPSEAWA organization - in the form of coffee and tea mugs from the Japanese American National Museum which is located in Los Angeles. Thank you. The composition of our membership is an amazing testament to the multi-cultural composition of the Los Angeles area as well as to the other varied interests and accomplishments of our members: Sarira Alexander is an attorney who was born in Iran; Jane Bayes is a professor of women's studies at California State University, Northridge, and participated in the Women's Conference in Beijing; Dr. Lauren Bryant is a medical doctor who attended the conference in Nairobi, Kenya; Mercedes Cruz is an attorney of Cuban descent; Marian Fay is of Chinese descent originally from Hawaii and is currently the CEO of a laser technology company; Harumi Hata is an attorney who is fluent in Japanese; Angela Hg Holberton is from Hong Kong and is active in several sister city programs with cities in Asia; Gloria Lau is from Hong Kong and is a reporter for Forbes magazine; Pamela Logan has a PhD in astrophysics and a black belt in karate, and has written a book about her travels in Tibet; Leticia Quesada is the former President of the Board of the Los Angeles Unified School District and is currently the Director of the Mexican Cultural Institute; Shirani Stanislaus is from Sri Lanka and currently works as a property manager; Yen Lu Wong is from Hong Kong and is a former choreographer who currently serves as the Director of New Wave Learning for the California State University System; and I am an attorney. We have had several productive meetings. One of them featured one of our members, Pam Logan, who gave a talk and showed slides of her adventures in Tibet. We are also undertaking an Internet project whereby we hope to communicate with other PPSEAWA members regarding the role that work, both for compensation and in the form of volunteer activities, plays in women's lives. Thank you for all of your assistance in forming the Los Angeles Chapter.
