PPSEAWA-Minnesota Report Spring 1997

For a midwinter break and to celebrate the Chinese New Year, we gathered for a social meeting at the Bali Hai restaurant for dinner and their Polynesian show. For many of us the songs and dances reminded us of Tonga and the Pacific Islands we visited in 1994. Celebrating New Year is always one of the successful gatherings of the year.

We held our Annual Meeting on May 1, 1997 at the party room in Galtier Plaza, St. Paul. At issue was our status as a chapter, to properly elect a President or disband and become members at large. A unanimous vote of the members present elected:

Officers for 1997-98

President: Ann Aurelius

Vice President: Dixie Riley

Treasurer: Barbara Gudmundson

Council member: Luverne Lein

Council member: Dorothy Allen

Council member: Corrine Pearson

Chapter Representative: Shirley Berkness

On May 31, there was a workshop held in St. Paul, Minnesota, "Young Women's Health Expo". This is co-sponsored by UNESCO, PPSEAWA-USA, The YWCA of St. Paul and the SELF Group of Central High School. This collaborative effort is Cochaired by Diane Isaacs, Central High School student leader; Jane Bates, YWCA SELF Program Director; and Patricia Fuchs, PPSEAWA-Minnesota member at St. Paul Schools Community Resources Coordinator. The program includes two speakers, one on new techniques in stress reduction, the other on nutrition issues: fast food vs. healthy food.

Child care was provided and free transportation via YWCA vans from any High School in the city. Following the formal presentations there was a time for healthy snacks and a mini-fair of booths to browse. Representatives of health clubs, whole foods and health product organizations offered advice and information to the participants. There was a drawing for a workout package and health supplements for participants.

Important to note that the planning, choices for program and the advertisement has all been done by High School students. This supports the wish of the Director General of UNESCO, Federico Mayor, that young people be involved in the work of our organizations whenever possible.

PPSEAWA-Minnesota is next in the rotation to host the fall PPSEAWA-USA Board meeting. As there are many educators in our group, we propose to use a two day break from school, the date we prefer is Saturday, October 18. Subject to Board approval, we will begin to plan a dinner for the evening of October 17 and luncheon and entertainment for the member's meeting of October 18.
