New York Chapter Report

In preparation for the conference in Malaysia several of our programs have been on the subject of Malaysia. In February we were highly honored to have as our speaker, Ambassador Dr. Hasmy Agam, from the Malaysia Mission and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Our annual International Dinner celebrated Malaysia. Most of the decorations and tapes used were on loan from the Malaysia Tourism Board. Guests and members attended in their national costumes, and Edith Hugentobler put together a fashion show of dresses from many Southeast Asian countries.

We were privileged to be invited to lunch at the Permanent Mission of Malaysia to the United Nations and to view a special showing of an exhibition of Malaysian arts and crafts. A slide show was presented by the Malaysian Tourism Board. During this same week in September, board members were invited to a Tea Reception given by Dr. Siti Hasmah, the wife of the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Dr. Hasmah answered our questions about Malaysia.

The annual Christmas luncheon was held at the New York Academy of Science. A millinery show of designer hats was modeled by members. The music entertainment was rendered by our member Carolyn Harmon.

The Chinese Lunar New Year, the year of the Ox 4695, was celebrated with a buffet lunch at the Church Center. Tisa Chang, Artistic/Producing Director of the Pan Asian Repertory Theatre gave us insights into this professional company of Asian American actors. We were treated to songs and a dance from the production, "Shanghai Lil."

A long-time member of PPSEAWA, Alice Shimomura, gave a talk on the years preceding and following Pearl Harbor: the political and social consequences for an American citizen whose parents represented the enemy in WWII.

At another meeting members attend a Forum on Women & Public Policy: The 1997 Agenda. This was an analysis of the women's vote in the 1996 Presidential election.

The year was ended with an outing to lunch at the Penang restaurant and a tour of the backstage of the Metropolitan Opera House.

New York Chapter currently has 123 members.
