President's Report
Royal Buscombe; 45 year member of PPSEAWA Los Angeles Chapter Report PDF Version of this Bulletin |
President's Reportby Teresa A. Hintzke The new PPSEAWA year started with the International Conference in August 1997 in KL, Malaysia. The US delegation was the largest since the 1972 Conference; 49 members attended from the US. At the conference PPSEAWA USA officially welcomed our seventh chapter, New Jersey. In addition, two very significant recommendations were proposed by Royal Buscombe: 1. Support the ratification and implementation of the Convention of the Rights of the Child. 2. Support UNIFEM One of my goals as National President has been to visit every chapter of PPSEAWA USA during my first year in office. My first visit coincided with the National Board meeting in October in St. Paul, Minnesota where we heard reports from some of the delegates who attended the International Conference and reports from pre-conference workshop participants. In March, I went to California, where I met with members of two PPSEAWA chapters, Stockton and LA. The Stockton Chapter, which was founded in the early 1960's is being revived by Cisco Kihara and Cyndy Green, whose mother, the late Cynthia Mog, was a chapter President. I attended their meeting, which was hosted by Cisco. On March 14th, I flew down to Los Angeles for a day to attend a luncheon meeting of the LA Chapter, whose President is Marilyn Garcia. The luncheon was hosted by Miriam Fay. We were able to lay the groundwork for the October National Board meeting that will be held there. In April, I went to Philadelphia to meet with Libby Zinman-Schwartz, President of the New Jersey Chapter. The following day, I met with the New York Chapter; I was able to attend their board meeting and members' get-together, where the Ambassador of Vietnam, Ngo Quang Xuan, was guest speaker. On May 9th, I went to Toledo to meet with the Toledo Chapter and was there for their chapter elections. I was pleased to see the excellent turnout for this meeting. I delivered copies of Convention of the Rights of the Child to each chapter president, so they could pursue ratification in their own areas. PPSEAWA USA membership is now 312, with seven chapters and sixteen members at large.
