New York Chapter Report

The 70th Anniversary of PPSEAWA International, (1928-1998), was celebrated in grand style by the New York Chapter on March 27, 1998 at the Church Center for the United Nations by 130 members and guests! As befitting the founding of the Association 70 years ago in Honolulu, Hawaii, the theme of the dinner was Hawaii with a Hawaiian Luau feast and an exciting Polynesian Revue!

Appropriately the guest of honor was Li Ling-Ai, a long time PPSEAWA member with multifaceted accomplishments both nationally and internationally, literally born into PPSEAWA membership as the daughter of Kong Tai Hueng Li, a prominent physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, one of six very notable women who made an indelible mark in Hawaii's history. Li Ling-Ai naturally developed her many talents in a environment which encouraged creativity and service and internationalism since her mother was one of the founding members of PPSEAWA Hawaii.

Under the leadership of Alice Chun, the dinner committee consisted of Anna Chan, Mary Chin, Edith Hugentobler, Carole Pilosi, and Helen Chong. The hall was beautifully decorated by E. Hugentobler and everyone was garlanded with a lovely lei. Beside the many delicious dishes of duck, chicken, noodles, and seafood, sat an imposing suckling pig, all 40 pounds of him, with a seeming semi-smile on his face! Mr. Jip Chun, Alice's husband, expertly did the honors of serving this piglet! We don't know who prepared this piece de resistance, but it was mighty good, skin and all! Kudos to the food committee and to the program planners!

The Polynesian Revue performed by the Royal Hawaiians was delightfully rousing, lithe little dancers, their graceful hulas and songs rendered soulfully by Jonathon Ahi'Hoku, M.C.

Li Ling-Ai hula'd sedately for us all, happily participating in the evening performance. Alice Chun presented her with a plaque of appreciation for her many years of devoted service to PPSEAWA;

an anonymous donation of lovely orchids was also given to the honoree. The dinner ended with a festively decorated anniversary cake for dessert. It was indeed a wonderful celebration!
