Toledo Chapter Report

What better way to start the 1997-98 year for the Toledo Chapter of PPSEAWA that to have the September meeting devoted to having reports from the nine members who have attended the 20th Triennial Malaysian Conference with general discussion by the membership. Attending the conference were Fran DeLamater, Lorene Gunderson, Sonia Gunderson, Berniece Husted, Christine Loo, Ginney Schlicher, Adeline Talip, Sabah Talip and Marge Wilson.

Having been functioning regularly since October 1957, a special luncheon was held on October 25th to celebrate our 40th year. Twenty-five members and former members participated and Dr. Elizabeth-Louise Girardi discussed the activities of the Pacific members and associations. From its inception, Toledo Chapter has been a study group and has recognized the United Nations Day which was done at this time.

At our November meeting, Louise Bankey, a member, discussed "The Environment" as a process that involves the individual sat all times and in varying degrees rather than as an isolated operation. Louise is deeply involved in the study and has attended many meetings in and out of the state on the subject. She provided each of us with a folder of information that could be passed on to others or kept for future reference. members were amazed to learn how each of us is involved with things, people agriculture, manufacture near or far from us; now or future.

Art in the general sense, which most of our members have studied or encouraged at our local art museum is a subject that we study almost yearly. For our January meeting, Carolyn Putney from the Toledo Museum of Art was the speaker on Cambodian art. Tapes were shown to augment the discussion on statuary and to compare it with works from India between the 9th and 14th centuries.

As in most scheduled meetings, members may bring guests. At the March meeting, ten guests were present. Gloria Penn Brown, Coordinator of Multicultural Activities for the Toldeo Board of Education, spoke on multiculturalism in our changing world. The individual cultures of the members were used to show how we tend to perpetuate racial nicknames and prejudices and how it is found in the schools especially in the older ethnic neighborhoods. Our guests were a mixed group of young collegians to older citizens, mostly from Asian or African heritage. One of the guests, Greta Ullman who originated from Germany, plans to join our chapter.

Our main meeting is our annual meeting at which we also discuss current events. Tentative plans are have our National President, Teresa Hintkze as our guest to speak to us on the growth of PPSEAWA and plans for the future.
