PPSEAWA USA news

The conference in Bali was a great experience for me as your USA President. The welcome I received from all the delegations was unbelievable. Bali is beautiful and our Indonesian hosts made us feel like valued guests.

My first duty was to help with the International election; our own Teresa Hintzke was elected as International President and Taina Woodward as International Secretary. Congratulations to them both.

The United Nations International Year of Youth: Dialogue and Mutual Understanding commenced in August. PPSEAWA’s Youth Ambassador Program is a great example of our organization’s commitment to get more young women involved in decision-making at the highest levels.

We would like to increase PPSEAWA’s online presence through the website and expand electronic networking. Kate created a mailing list for PPSEAWA young women this summer that we can expand to others to use as networking tool, to pass exchange information about the Millennium Development programs and issues that capture our attention such as health, literacy, and environment. Networking like this is a good way to find avenues for funding ourselves, as well as a way to cut expenses for programs by sharing resources.

entitled "Our Young Women, Our Future” was developed by the Youth Ambassadors nominated by PPSEAWA’s International Council: Angela Lee, Kate Morioka, and Akari Yamada. We deeply appreciated the opportunity to share our voices and concerns during the conference program.

The following presentations were given at the morning panel on Friday, May 21, 2010:

As an average college student, Bali was a place I never expected to visit. Yet when my mom invited me to accompany her to attend the PPSEAWA Conference this past summer, it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. After all, who would say no to a vacation in paradise?

It turns out this trip to Bali was not your typical vacation of sightseeing and relaxing on the beach… it was something far better. The majority of the time there was spent at the conference- attending meetings, discussions, presentations, and simply getting to know one inspiring group of women.

On November 20, 2009 the international community observed the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by the UN General Assembly. This became the first legally binding international convention to affirm human rights for all children, in all countries and cultures, at all times. The treaty spells out the basic human rights that children have; the right to survival; to develop to the fullest; to attend school; to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation; and to participate fully in family, cultural and social life.

On July 2 the GA passed a resolution to create UN Women. In the months leading up to the resolution, international feminists became increasingly giddy as the culmination of their four year effort to create a bigger more effective UN agency for women grew closer. UN Women unites the four previous agencies working for women including UNIFEM, the entity most focused on country level programming. The transition is in process and UN Women will be officially fully operational by January 1, 2011.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight targets established by world leaders at the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000 to address the world’s major development challenges by 2015. PPSEAWA-International has been actively working to raise awareness of the UN Millennium Development Goals since the International Conference in New Zealand in 2007. Millennium Development Goal Three (MDG 3): Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment guarantees that women have equal opportunities to make their lives, and the lives of their families better.
