Toledo Chapter

25 September 2008

The Toledo chapter has had a difficult 2007-08 year.  Our great loss of Adeline Talip, Joann Cousino, Lorene Gunderson, Mary Helen Welch and Rhoda “Do” Jost has devastated our members.  Each of them contributed greatly to our programs and activities as well as national involvement by Adeline, Jody, and Lorene.  We mourn their passing and miss them very much.

The Toledo Chapter of PPSEAWA has lost three dear friends and inspiring members. On the last day of October, 2007, Adeline Talip died at the home of her daughter Lila Aossey in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Adeline had traveled to many of the International meetings during the 1960s, '70's, '80's and '90's. She shared her home often for chapter meetings, led our chapter as President twice, and served in many other offices through the 5 decades of her membership. She held the longest active membership, but sadly was unable to be in Toledo for our 50th year celebration in October.

Our meetings have been varied. Isabelle Lu Christopher, our chapter treasurer and a native of China, gave us an overview of the remarkable changes occurring in her native country. We were all challenged to update our impressions of China to better match the reality of today.

Our thanks to Toledo Chapter for hosting the Fall Board Meeting. Also, we owe our appreciation to Louise Bankey for opening her lovely home on Friday evening with a reception to welcome out-of-town members. The Board Meeting took place Saturday morning, November 5, 2005 at the Renaissance Place Facility in Sylvania, Ohio.

The Toledo Chapter Board met during the summer to create the calendar for the 2005-06 year. The presenter at our first meeting in September was Nandini Bhattacharya, chair of Women and Gender Studies at U of Toledo, who spoke to us about women in India today. In October, we were inspired by Lorna Gonsalves, an activist for justice, peace and equality. We look forward to programs on Buddhism from a woman’s viewpoint, and an update on Afghan culture, expanding on our experience with the ten Afghan women who visited last year.

1 August 2005

Our chapter meetings were varied. At our first meeting, our member Dorothy Zurheide reported on the activities of HEIFER INTERNATIONAL, an organization that provides seed livestock to needy people worldwide to support their becoming self-sustaining. Many of our members have contributed to this worthy cause. An extensive history/geography/cultural report was presented on Sri Lanka, ironically only weeks before the tsunami. We supported International Education Week by manning a booth at the University of Toledo. This event is chaired by Temmulen Sunid, one of our members.

1 April 2005

At our first meeting of the year David Harnish and Maxine Barry gave a presentation called “The Charm of Bali and Its People.” The presenters have traveled many times to Bali, worked with the people there and charmed our group with stories of their experiences, complete with wonderful slides.

1 April 2004

The Toledo chapter celebrated our 45-year anniversary in 2002. Our October's meeting was held in the home of Joe Ann Cousino. Joe Ann, a talented artist, gave us a wonderful presentation called Artifacts in Asia. She exhibited gorgeous pieces of handmade artifacts which were collected in the past century. Nearly 30 of our members attended.
