Consultation Day was the “kickoff’ for the CSW 56th Forum, entitled “Empowering Rural Women; t heir needs and struggles as well as their successes”. Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director, UN Women, was the speaker.
The 25th International Triennial Conference marking the 85th Anniversary of PPSEAWA, hosted by PPSEAWA Fiji, was held at Novotel Hotel, Suva, Fiji and was attended by over 260 members from 14 PPSEAWA countries.
The Conference theme, Managing the Environment for a Sustainable And Peaceful World, was addressed by keynote speakers, Dr. Russell Howarth, Matadrevula Advisory Services, Mr.Taholo Kami, Oceania Regional Director for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Dr.Jiko Luveni, Fiji Minister for Women Affairs.
NGO Parallel Event - 56th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women
The fifty-sixth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will take place at United Nations Headquarters in New York from February 27 to March 9, 2012. On March 1st, PPSEAWA, along with the League of Women Voters of the United States, will co-sponsor a CSW side event, a panel discussion entitled “Girls' Safety in Homes, Community and Schools”. The panel discussion was organized by UNICEF's Working Group on Girls —Task Force to Prevent Violence Against Girls to cover best practices, intervention efforts and challenges in keeping girls safe.
Dr. Elizabeth Louise Girardi, PPSEAWA International President 1994-2000, passed away on November 30, 2011 at her home in Kenilworth, IL, USA.
Elizabeth Louise Girardi, familiarly known as Betty-Lou, was a Systematic Malacologist and her research work in that field took her to 25 different Pacific Islands, which led her interests to PPSEAWA.
