The fifty-sixth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will take place at United Nations Headquarters in New York from February 27 to March 9, 2012. On March 1st, PPSEAWA, along with the League of Women Voters of the United States, will co-sponsor a CSW side event, a panel discussion entitled “Girls' Safety in Homes, Community and Schools”. The panel discussion was organized by UNICEF's Working Group on Girls —Task Force to Prevent Violence Against Girls to cover best practices, intervention efforts and challenges in keeping girls safe. The panelists include: Marta Santos Pais (SRSG on Violence against Children), Professor Shang Lang Yan (Shieh Chien University in Taipei) and Teresa Hintzke (International President of PPSEAWA). It will take place at the Church Center for the United Nations from 6:15-7:45 pm on March 1, 2012.

Who: Ms. Marta Santos Pais, Special Representative of the Secretary General on Violence Against Children- A summary of the international efforts and challenges undertaken by the UN and specifically through the Special Representative's office to combat violence against girls in schools, communities and homes. She will also share best practices in stopping the violence.

Professor Shang Luan Yan, Chair and Director of the Department of Social Work at Shih Chien University in Taipei. – Discussion about Gender Mainstreaming: Programs for Women and Girls in Sciences and Engineering in Taiwan, There will also be a review on the advancements made!

Mrs. Teresa A. Hintzke, International President of PPSEAWA- Discussion about raising awareness of education in societies to ensure a safer and more nurturing environment for girls no matter where they are (c hildren of scavengers living on the discards of society, girls in dangerous urban areas or children who are victims of natural disasters as well as victims of conflicts).

What: What you need to know about safety and human rights in school, home, community, rural areas.
